I knitted my first sock!

I’m really enjoying knitting these days – winter is usually my season for serious cross-stitching, but knitting is probably a bit more practical given the climate here in Ottawa.

It’s the most wonderful time of the year.

It’s December, Ottawa is a winter wonderland, and I was tired of wearing a hat that kept slipping off. After seeing knitted hats going for $65 (!!!) at a local outdoor equipment store, I decided I would just make one. I’m pretty much a knitting n00b, but I found a pattern that was at my skill level and made myself a hat in ONE day.

I had a ton of yarn left over, so I started making mittens to match. I’m finished the first one. It might look a little stumpy, but I have very small hands so I modified the pattern just a bit to accommodate them. I plan to start the second mitten today.

After I finished my mitten, I made a wreath. The vine wreath was on sale for $4.99 at Michael’s, and then I just used leftover Christmas decorations to decorate it.

By mid-November, even when we’re having nice weather, things start to look pretty dreary and blah. With a keen eye, though, it is possible to spot little pops of colour and signs of life.

Soon, it’s all going to be white.

I decided to make this one black and white because the sky was so very blue the day I took this picture, which detracted from the slightly creepy feeling of the tree and its shadow. Turning it black and white also removed some distracting bits of colour from objects and buildings in the distance (this was taken at the Experimental Farm).

I should take a nicer picture of this one once it’s framed. I got this pattern out of a French magazine – thankfully, my French was adequate for understanding the simple written instructions. I rarely make things for myself, but this one is earmarked for my bathroom when the renovation is complete.

Nablopomo, November 20: Autumn Words

I came up with this little design a few days ago while trying out some different brushes for Photoshop. My little boy helped me come up with some Autumn-themed words.

After I posted it to Facebook, my brother commented on it, asking “Can you make me one with the words that I used to type this comment?” He was just kidding around, but I made him one anyway.
